Strength-Based Cards - Art Therapy Exercise

Materials needed:

  1. Blank index cards or cardstock

  2. Coloured pencils, markers, or crayons

  3. Strength-based qualities or attributes


  1. Prepare your workspace with the necessary materials and ensure you have a comfortable place to work.

  2. Take a few moments to center yourself and take a few deep breaths to relax.

  3. Cut the index cards or cardstock into smaller, manageable sizes. These will serve as your strength-based cards.

  4. Identify several personal strengths or qualities that you possess. These can be attributes such as resilience, creativity, kindness, determination, or any other positive qualities that resonate with you.

  5. Write or print one strength-based quality on each card. For example, "Resilient," "Creative," "Compassionate," "Courageous," "Persistent," or any other strength you identify within yourself.

  6. Begin colouring each card, focusing on incorporating colors and designs that resonate with the strength-based quality written on the card. Let your creativity flow as you bring each card to life with vibrant colors and patterns.

  7. As you color each card, reflect on the strength-based quality it represents. Visualize yourself embodying that strength and recall times when you have demonstrated it in your life.

  8. Take your time with the coloring process, allowing it to be a mindful activity that helps you stay present and focused.

  9. Once you've finished coloring all your strength-based cards, take a moment to observe them as a collection. Notice how the colors and designs you've chosen enhance the representation of each strength.

  10. Keep your strength-based cards in a place where you can easily access them, such as on your desk, in your wallet, or in your bag. Use them as a source of inspiration and motivation whenever you need a reminder of your inner strengths.
